History

Hawkins Chapel Cemetery grew out of a pioneer community centered here after S. J. Hawkins brought his family to the area in 1876. Settlers built a school in 1879 and held summer camp meetings under a brush arbor beginning in 1882; Hawkins Chapel Methodist Church followed in 1884, and the first burial in the adjoining cemetery took place in 1889. Though the school and church later closed, the cemetery remains in use and descendants still gather for an annual reunion.
