History

The Zapata County Museum of History opened in 2011 near the shores of Falcon Reservoir and tells the county's story in English and Spanish. Its collection is especially poignant because the original town of Zapata lies beneath the reservoir, created in the mid-20th century, which forced the relocation of more than 600 families; the town's photographs and artifacts were saved and are now housed in the museum. Exhibits cover the energy industry, regional natural history, and military history from the Spanish colonial era onward.
