History
This Centennial marker notes that a mission visita once stood in the vicinity, established in 1750 during Jose de Escandon's project to settle and Christianize the region. A visita was a small country chapel visited by priests to say Mass and administer sacraments rather than a staffed mission; this one was an outpost tied to Mission San Francisco Solano de Ampuero in the Mexican town of Revilla. The gray granite 1936 marker stands near the courthouse plaza in present-day Zapata.
