Texas A&M: Historic Core & Architecture

Texas A&M opened in 1876 on open prairie beside a rail line, and fire claimed much of its first campus, including Old Main in 1912. This walk traces the brick and cast-stone buildings that rose in the decades after, from the 1909 engineering hall to the columned 1932 administration building. Sbisa Dining Hall replaced a mess hall lost to a 1911 kitchen blaze and still serves students on the north side of campus, while Nagle Hall, built in 1909 with engaged Ionic columns rising through its upper stories, is among the oldest buildings the university still uses. Look closely at the details. The columned 1932 Jack K. Williams Administration Building sets a terrazzo map of Texas into its lobby floor. The 1929 Chemistry Building hides animal heads, skulls and fossils in its colorful tile bands and has gilded grillwork on its entry ceiling. Cushing Memorial Library, completed in 1930, now keeps special collections that include a celebrated science fiction and fantasy archive.
