Texas A&M: Aggie Traditions

Few campuses wear their customs as openly as Texas A&M, and this loop visits the places where those customs are cast in bronze and stone. It begins where Aggies receive their rings, crosses the 20-acre Aggie Park, and then circles Kyle Field past monuments to the War Hymn and the 12th Man. The walk closes at the graves of past Reveille mascots and the fountain in front of Rudder Tower. Everything on the route is outdoors and free to see, though game days bring heavy crowds.

The Aggie Ring gets its due at Haynes Ring Plaza, where an oversized bronze copy of a Class of 1946 ring weighs about 6,500 pounds and the plaza itself takes the shape of a ring when seen from above; new ring recipients line up here for photos. Aggie Park, opened in 2022 after pandemic delays, adds a nearly two-acre lake, a 102-foot plank bridge and an everyday gathering place that fills up on game days.

Much of the story centers on Kyle Field. An oversized statue recalls E. King Gill, who was called down from the press box in January 1922 to suit up as injuries mounted, giving rise to the 12th Man and the student section's custom of standing all game long. Just outside the stadium's north end, the Reveille Cemetery holds nine of the collie mascots, with a small scoreboard mounted so they can always keep an eye on the score.

It's a moving, surprisingly personal way to understand why Aggies take their traditions so seriously, and why so many come back to see these places again.
