Northgate Pub Crawl (Texas A&M)

Just across University Drive from the Texas A&M campus, Northgate has been the Aggie hangout district for about a century, and this short crawl covers it in a few blocks. You'll start at two bars that opened in the 1970s and still look it, then cut past the bottle caps pressed into the alley between the Dixie Chicken and the Dry Bean. The route turns onto Boyett Street for an Irish taphouse and ends in the 1940 Campus Theater building, where a legendary country dance hall has made its comeback. Northgate, the strip of bars and eateries facing Texas A&M across University Drive, has been where Aggies unwind for roughly a hundred years. This short crawl is about character more than nightlife flash: worn tables, odd décor and the kind of stories regulars love to retell.

The Dixie Chicken is the district's landmark. Two partners turned an old pool hall called the Aggie Den into the bar in 1974, took the name from a Little Feat song, and have watched generations of students carve their initials into the tables ever since; it bills itself as Northgate's oldest bar. Beside it, Bottlecap Alley is studded with pressed-in caps, a habit owner Don Ganter said began as a fix for a muddy patch when he wasn't allowed to put down gravel.

Duddley's Draw has been pouring since 1977, when two Texas Tech buddies took over a former pizza place and named it after cartoon Mountie Dudley Do-Right, adding a 'd' to stay clear of legal trouble. Its Friday crowd mixes students, professors and tradespeople in a way regulars liken to Cheers. And in 2026 the people behind the much-missed Hurricane Harry's brought country dancing back to Northgate inside the 1940 art deco Campus Theater.
