Comfort is home to something you won't find almost anywhere else in the former Confederacy: a monument raised to honor loyalty to the Union. The German settlers who founded this town were mostly Freethinkers — intellectuals who valued reason, democracy, and the abolition of slavery over the politics of the state around them. That loyalty had a price. This short walk tells that story honestly: the community that held it, the men who died defending it, and the burying ground and monument the town built to remember them.
