About this tour

Houston has a wonderfully weird artistic streak, and nowhere is it more gloriously on display than in the world of art cars and visionary folk art. Each spring the city hosts one of the largest art car parades on earth — hundreds of vehicles transformed into rolling sculptures — and the whole movement grew out of one obsessed mail carrier's homemade monument to the humble orange. This driving loop connects the folk-art landmarks that gave the scene its soul: the Orange Show Monument, the mosaic wonderland of Smither Park, the beer-can-clad bungalow across town, and the boulevard where the art cars roll. It's a tour of Houston at its most joyfully eccentric — a reminder that great art doesn't always hang in a museum. Some of it drives to work, or is built from 50,000 flattened beer cans.
