Houston Rocks: A Hip-Hop & Soul Music Trail

Houston's music didn't come from a boardroom — it came from the neighborhoods. In the historically Black wards on the near south side, especially Third Ward, the blues men and soul singers of the mid-twentieth century built a scene rich enough to feed a local record industry. Later, out of the same streets, a homegrown hip-hop sound rose that changed rap for good: slowed-down, syrup-thick, unmistakably Houston. This driving trail links the landmarks of both eras. It starts in Third Ward at the ballroom and street corner where blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins played, honors the artists and educators who gave the neighborhood its cultural backbone, then heads north and south to the record labels and shops where Houston built its own music business — from the storied Peacock Records of the 1950s to the record store that carried the city's screwed-and-chopped sound into the world. Along the way you'll pass Frenchtown's zydeco roots and the ground that shaped a hometown superstar. It's a thirty-mile loop through the beating musical heart of the Bayou City. Roll the windows down.
