About this tour

Buffalo Bayou is the reason Houston exists — the sluggish, tree-lined waterway the city grew up around — and today its central stretch is one of the best urban paddles in Texas. This tour follows the bayou through the heart of Buffalo Bayou Park, from the launch below the skyline to the takeout near downtown, and it saves its best trick for last. Beneath the Waugh Drive bridge lives a colony of roughly a quarter-million Mexican free-tailed bats, and on warm evenings from spring through fall they pour out at dusk in a spiraling black ribbon that rises over the water. Bring a kayak or rent one, plan to be off the water before dark, and time your paddle so you finish at the bat bridge just as the sun goes down. The stops below run west to east down the park, ending at the viewing spot for the emergence.
