Houston's athletics district crowds the east side of campus along Cullen Boulevard, close enough to cover on foot in under an hour. The loop starts at the arena that once housed Phi Slama Jama and passes the practice center named for the coach who built that team. From there it heads to the baseball park, the track named for an Olympic legend and the softball diamond. TDECU Stadium, on the general Campus Tour, is right next door if you want to add it.
The University of Houston keeps most of its sports venues close together on the east side of campus, so a fan can see a lot of Cougar history in a short visit.
The Fertitta Center is the headliner. It opened in 1969 as Hofheinz Pavilion, where the dunking Phi Slama Jama squads thrilled crowds in the early '80s. A gift from Tilman Fertitta paid for a rebuild inside the original walls that was completed in 2018. The court still honors Guy V. Lewis, who coached the Cougars for 30 seasons and reached five Final Fours.
Track fans can visit the Carl Lewis International Complex, named for the Cougar who later won nine Olympic gold medals. Its track honors coach Tom Tellez, whose athletes won 30 NCAA individual titles, and a tribute to him was unveiled in 2025. Baseball plays at Schroeder Park, which has hosted several NCAA regionals and a Super Regional. Most facilities are closed to walk-in visitors, but the outside view still captures the program's reputation for speed and flair.
