About this tour

For much of the twentieth century, Houston's Third Ward was one of the great engines of Black American music, and the Eldorado Ballroom was its grandest stage. From the corner of Elgin and Dowling, the Eldorado hosted Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ray Charles and a parade of touring stars, while home-grown blues legends like Lightnin' Hopkins made the neighborhood's clubs and porches their own. This driving tour traces that legacy across the Third Ward: the newly restored ballroom, the artists' markers, Emancipation Park, and the streets where the music was made. It is a story of joy and creativity built inside the hard limits of a segregated city — and of a community that turned a few blocks into a wellspring of sound. Roll the windows down and put on some Texas blues.
