About this tour

Beneath the green lawns of Buffalo Bayou Park lies one of Houston's strangest and most beautiful spaces — a vast underground reservoir that supplied the city's drinking water for eighty years, then vanished from memory before it was rediscovered and reborn as a public wonder. This short walk starts at the surface, tracing the water-works history along Sabine Street, then leads you to the entrance of the Cistern itself, where 221 concrete columns rise from a shallow reflecting pool in a space that feels like a flooded cathedral. It's a tour about the hidden infrastructure that made a swampy city livable, and about how one forgotten room became an unlikely stage for art and echo. The Cistern is entered only by ticketed tour on certain days, so plan ahead. Bring a light jacket — it's cool and damp below ground, and every whisper carries.
