About this tour

Downtown Houston keeps its oldest ghosts in its oldest bricks. This short loop threads the Main Street Market Square Historic District — the founding heart of the city, where the Allen brothers laid out their townsite in 1836 — past the buildings that survived fire, flood, and a century and a half of change. The documented history is remarkable on its own: a bakery that fed Confederate Houston, a hotel that stood where the Republic of Texas once met, a bar that has poured drinks in the same walls for generations. And wherever old buildings stand this close together, the stories follow. Guides tell of a woman in white at an upstairs window, a bartender who never quite clocked out, and a hotel suite where a party from the 1960s is said to still be going. We'll tell you what actually happened here first — then the legend people whisper on top of it. Bring comfortable shoes and a healthy skepticism.
