West 19th Street is the retail heart of the Houston Heights, a walkable run of locally owned shops that mixes vintage clothing, folk art, antiques, gifts, and homegrown boutiques in a way you won't find anywhere else in the city. The Heights grew up as one of Houston's first planned suburbs, and 19th Street kept the intimate, storefront scale of an old streetcar shopping strip even as the neighborhood around it gentrified. This walk moves down the street's most concentrated blocks, stopping at the antique galleries, folk-art shops, and boutiques that give it its character. Many of the buildings are historic, some still wearing their original pressed-tin ceilings inside.
