About this tour

Houston has one of the most distinctive musical fingerprints in America — a slow, syrupy, chopped-and-screwed sound born in its neighborhoods, built on decades of blues, gospel, and soul that came before. This drive maps that lineage across the city, from a pioneering Black-owned record label of the 1940s and a legendary Third Ward ballroom to the record shops, studios, and street corners where Houston rap became a national force. It runs through the wards that raised the sound, celebrating the DJs, rappers, singers, and label owners who made Houston's music unmistakable. Some of these artists are gone now, and where that's true we say so simply and keep moving — because the real subject here is the music they made and the culture that keeps it alive. Turn it up and roll slow; that's the Houston way.
