About this tour

This is the story Houston ghost-hunters tell first, and it starts with a documented fact more unsettling than any legend: in 1924, the city built its charity hospital directly on top of an old municipal cemetery, and moved only a fraction of the graves. The rest, records suggest, are still there. Jefferson Davis Hospital served Houston's poorest patients from 1924 to 1989, then sat empty and decaying until it was rescued in 2005 and reborn as the Elder Street Artist Lofts, where artists live and work today. Around that hard history a thick body of ghost lore has grown — cold spots, footsteps, shapes in the windows — which we'll relay honestly as the stories they are. This is a respectful, drive-mostly loop: we're not making a spectacle of the dead, we're tracing how a city's memory gets built over and then, slowly, remembered. Please view the lofts and cemetery grounds only from public sidewalks and streets — people live and rest here.
