About this tour

Two great morning traditions collide in Houston, and this drive follows both. First, the kolache — the soft, sweet Czech pastry brought to Texas by immigrants who settled the farmland between Houston and Austin in the 1800s, filled with fruit, cream cheese, or poppy seed (and, in the Texas twist, the sausage-stuffed savory version many Texans wrongly call a kolache but is really a klobasnek). Second, the donut — where Houston holds a special place, home to Shipley Do-Nuts, founded here in 1936, and to the thousands of Vietnamese-American donut shops that fry fresh rings across the region every dawn. This trail links the icons and the specialists: an original kolache shop, the Shipley flagship, a savory-kolache favorite, and a couple of neighborhood donut counters. Go early — the best stuff is gone by mid-morning — and pace yourself, because it's a lot of dough. Grab a dozen mixed for the road.
