About this tour

In a quiet corner of Montrose, where gray bungalows sit under old trees, a French-born couple built one of the most remarkable art enclaves in the world — and then gave it away free to the public. John and Dominique de Menil spent decades assembling a collection that ran from Byzantine icons to Surrealist paintings, and rather than crowd it into a single monument they scattered it across a walkable neighborhood of purpose-built museums and chapels, all admission-free. This short walk threads that enclave: the airy main museum by Renzo Piano, the meditative Rothko Chapel with its obelisk dedicated to Dr. King, and the smaller galleries and gray houses that make the whole neighborhood feel like a single, hushed work of art. Move slowly here — this is a place built for looking.
