About this tour

For a city built on cotton and crude, Houston made a surprising bet on culture. Over a few downtown blocks near the bayou it built one of the largest concentrations of theater seats in the country — a district where a resident symphony, opera, ballet, and one of America's oldest professional theaters all perform within walking distance of one another. That did not happen by accident. It grew from the ambitions of civic patrons, oil fortunes turned toward the arts, and a scrappy director who founded a theater with a fistful of penny postcards. This short walk traces the Theater District and the older cultural landmarks around it — a grand Spanish library, an old auditorium hotel — that mark Houston's long climb toward a cultural life to match its wealth.
