Jason's Lyric & Houston's Hood-Cinema Wards

In 1994 a Houston-set love story called Jason's Lyric brought the city's historic wards to the movie screen, filming its tale of two brothers largely across the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Wards — neighborhoods that took their names from the voting precincts of the newly chartered city in the 1850s. This drive uses that film as a lens to explore the real places behind the fiction: the Freedmen's Town streets where formerly enslaved Houstonians built a community after emancipation, the Third Ward that grew into a center of Black cultural and economic life, and the venues, parks, and murals that gave these wards their identity. Along the way you'll pass real THC historical markers to legends of Houston music, art, and civil rights, mixed with the on-screen and behind-the-scenes locations of the movie. Where a filming site is gone or private, we say so and keep to public streets.
