About this tour

At roughly 1,500 acres, Memorial Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and it carries a solemn history: the land was once Camp Logan, a World War I army training camp, and the park was created as a living memorial to the soldiers who trained there. This short walking loop takes in the park's most beautiful new corner — the Eastern Glades, a hundred-acre landscape of meadow, lake, and a colonnade of live oaks that opened in 2020 — with a side trip toward the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center on the park's western edge. It's an easy mile on paved and boardwalk paths, ideal at dawn or dusk when the light is soft and the birds are busy. Bring water, especially in summer, and take your time; this is a walk about pausing, not covering ground.
