East of downtown, across the bayou, lies the Second Ward — the Segundo Barrio, the historic heart of Mexican-American Houston. One of the four original wards laid out in the nineteenth century, it began with a strong German population but was transformed in the early twentieth century as Mexican and Mexican-American families, many fleeing the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution, settled here to work the nearby Ship Channel, railroads, and rail yards. Out of that community grew Our Lady of Guadalupe, the first Mexican national parish in the city, along with the churches, schools, and social halls that anchored a Spanish-speaking neighborhood for generations. This walk threads those founding institutions — the mother church, the parish schools, and the community landmarks — that made the Second Ward the cradle of Houston's Mexican-American life. Walk it with respect; these are living places of worship and memory.
