About this tour

A block west of Main Plaza, San Antonio quietly built its financial district — not with old money from back East, but with fortunes made hauling ox-cart freight, storing wool, and running frontier mercantile stores. This short walk traces how those working businesses turned into marble-lobbied banks within a couple of generations, starting at the modest cottage where a young O. Henry once lived and ending among the buildings that still anchor downtown's skyline. It's a quieter San Antonio story than the Alamo, but it's the one that paid for a lot of what came after.
