About this tour

San Antonio's East Side carries one of the deepest African American heritage stories in Texas, and this drive traces its landmarks: a century-old bridge that connected the neighborhood to downtown and later became a rallying point for community land rights, a 1918 auditorium where Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington once played — and where neighbors formed a human chain in 1973 to stop its demolition — and the church and college campus that trace one continuous story of African American education in San Antonio, from an 1877 vision for freed Texans to the HBCU/Hispanic-Serving campus that stands today.
