About this tour

In one twenty-six-year stretch, this single downtown plaza corridor saw a Texian army storm it out of Mexican control, a Mexican army briefly retake it, and a U.S. Army garrison surrender it to secession — three different flags changing hands in three separate fights. This walk connects the sites: the marker to Ben Milam, who rallied the volunteers who broke the 1835 siege; the Storming of Bexar battle ground itself; the spot tied to Mexican General Adrian Woll's 1842 invasion; the site of General Twiggs's 1861 surrender of federal troops, which effectively opened the Civil War in Texas; and the historic Cos House in La Villita, where the 1835 fight ended with a negotiated truce. It's under a mile of walking through 26 years of Texas history.
