About this tour

In October 1915, a young Second Lieutenant named Dwight Eisenhower was serving as officer of the day at Fort Sam Houston when he was introduced to eighteen-year-old Mamie Doud, in San Antonio for the winter with her family. It took him four weeks to land a date on her crowded calendar, but the courtship stuck: they married the following July and stayed married for fifty-two years, through a world war and a presidency. This short drive traces that story across the post where they met and where they later set up their first home — not, importantly, where they got married; that happened eight hundred miles away, in Denver.
