About this tour

Sixteen years before Hollywood came looking for airfields, San Antonio was already flying. This short drive follows the U.S. Army's very first steps into the air: the parade ground where a self-taught lieutenant risked a fragile Wright biplane in 1910, and the nearby flying field that trained the Army's earliest aero squadrons before they outgrew Fort Sam Houston and moved south to found Kelly Field. Katherine Stinson's own flying-school story, and Stinson Field itself, belong to a different drive through San Antonio's south side — this one stays close to where military aviation actually began.
