About this tour

On a quiet stretch of San Antonio's West Side, a convent, a university, and two of the city's oldest cemeteries sit within a mile of each other — threads of one continuous story. In 1895 the Sisters of Divine Providence moved their growing teaching order to sixteen acres beside Lake Elmendorf and built what became Our Lady of the Lake University; the sisters who taught there still rest in a small cemetery on the edge of campus. A short drive away, San Fernando Cemetery No. 2 holds thousands more West Side families — including, fittingly, one of its most famous daughters.
