About this tour

The puffy taco was born here. So, in a sense, was the modern idea of the breakfast taco as an all-day San Antonio staple, and so was the city's claim on chili con carne, cooked for generations by the open-air 'Chili Queens' of Military and Haymarket plazas. This drive traces those signature flavors from their birthplace to the places still serving them today: the drive-in that trademarked the puffy taco, a Southtown institution built on breakfast tacos, a barbecue chain that's fed the city since 1953, a family-run kitchen keeping the Sunday barbacoa tradition alive, the plaza where the Chili Queens once ruled after dark, and a modern Pearl District kitchen carrying San Antonio's food identity into its next century.
