About this tour

Long before 'Remember the Alamo' became a rallying cry, San Antonio was already a Tejano city — founded by Canary Island settlers in 1731 and led for a century by families with names like Navarro, Ruiz, and Seguín. When Texas broke from Mexico in 1836, it wasn't only Anglo newcomers who signed on: native-born San Antonians risked their homes, their fortunes, and their lives to put their names on the Declaration of Independence and keep the new Republic supplied and defended. This short walk through the streets west of Main Plaza visits the preserved home of José Antonio Navarro and the markers of the Tejano patriots who stood beside him — a founding story that's every bit as San Antonio as the Alamo itself.
