About this tour

San Antonio's south side quietly shaped American flight. This drive starts at Stinson Field, the second-oldest continuously operated general-aviation airport in the country, founded by a teenage stunt pilot's family in 1915, and ends five miles east at the hangar row where a San Antonio-born astronaut trained before becoming the first American to walk in space. Along the way you'll pass a working vintage-aircraft museum and a Depression-era terminal still doing its job — a route that runs from barnstorming to the edge of space without ever leaving one stretch of the city.
