History
The Gunter Hotel opened November 20, 1909 on a downtown site that had held an inn since 1837, an eight-story, 301-room building that was the largest in San Antonio at the time. Designed by the St. Louis firm Mauran, Russell and Garden and named for rancher and financier Jot Gunter, it was expanded with three added floors in 1926 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
