History
The Post Chapel at Fort Sam Houston, known as the 'Gift Chapel,' was dedicated in 1909 by President William Howard Taft, its land donated by the city of San Antonio and its construction funded by community and military donors. Designed by San Antonio architect Leo M. J. Dielmann with Beaux-Arts detailing, a copper dome, and stained-glass windows, it was the first permanent religious building on the post. In late 1917 it hosted the courts-martial of soldiers of the 24th Infantry following the Camp Logan riots. It is one of the Fort Sam Houston buildings individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
