History

The Quadrangle is the oldest structure at Fort Sam Houston, begun in 1876 and completed in 1878 as a U.S. Army quartermaster supply depot on land donated by the city of San Antonio. Between 1877 and 1879 it was adapted to house the headquarters of the Department of Texas, and in 1886 the Apache leader Geronimo was briefly held there before his exile to Florida. The post was named Fort Sam Houston in honor of Sam Houston in 1890.
