History

The Pershing House at Fort Sam Houston was built in 1881 as the commanding general's quarters, designed by architect Alfred Giles among a group of officers' residences. Constructed of rough native limestone ashlar with a corner tower of dressed limestone, it has served as the home of the post's commanding officers ever since. It took its current name after General John J. Pershing commanded the fort in 1917, shortly before he led the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1974.
