History
Local grocer and German immigrant Edward Franz Melcher opened the three-story Hotel Havana in 1914, working with San Antonio architect Arthur J. Herrmann to evoke the Mediterranean Revival style then fashionable in Cuba. Originally lodging for Melcher's visiting vendors, the riverside hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 for its location and eclectic architecture.
