History
St. Mark's Episcopal Church in downtown San Antonio is the only church in Texas designed by Richard Upjohn, the noted Gothic Revival architect and first president of the American Institute of Architects. The congregation formed in 1858, and the cornerstone was laid in 1859, but the Civil War interrupted construction so that work did not resume until 1873, with the building completed in 1875. An excellent example of Gothic Revival church architecture, St. Mark's was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
