History

Opened on October 8, 1926 in Brackenridge Park, the Witte Museum is often called the first major museum in Texas. It grew from the efforts of teacher and botanist Ellen Schulz Quillin, who raised funds to purchase a natural-history collection for the city, and was built with a bequest from businessman Alfred G. Witte in memory of his parents. Its collections span Texas history, natural science and culture, with a particular emphasis on South Texas.
