History
The Jose Francisco Ruiz House was built around 1745 and originally stood facing Military Plaza in downtown San Antonio, home to the family of Spanish tailor Juan Manuel Ruiz. His son Jose Francisco Ruiz became one of only two native Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence and served as San Antonio's first schoolmaster, teaching in the home's front room. The plaster-over-rubble house with cut-limestone corner quoining was moved to the grounds of the Witte Museum in 1943.
