History
Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded in 1720 by Franciscan missionary Antonio Margil de Jesus and grew into the largest and best known of the San Antonio missions, earning the nickname 'Queen of the Missions.' At its height about 350 Indian converts lived within its stone walls, sustained by extensive fields and herds, and its church and complex were completed by 1782. Now part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is celebrated for its baroque architecture and the sculpted Rose Window.
