History
The main visitor center of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park sits beside Mission San José, the largest of the city's Spanish missions, founded in 1720. The park was authorized in 1978 and established in 1983 through a partnership of the National Park Service, the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the San Antonio Conservation Society, building on restoration work begun at Mission San José in the 1930s under architect Harvey P. Smith. The missions were later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
