The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate opened a seminary in San Antonio in 1903 to train priests for the Southwest, and in 1927 they moved it to this hilltop campus a few miles north of what was then the edge of the city. The grounds are now home to Oblate School of Theology and to one of San Antonio's best-loved shrines. This walk begins at the statue of the order's founder, passes the memorial chapel, and climbs through the Lourdes grotto and the Guadalupe shrine above it before ending at a sculpture of the order's horseback missionaries.

At the request of San Antonio's bishop, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate founded the San Antonio Philosophical and Theological Seminary in 1903, aiming to form priests who could minister in both English and Spanish across the Southwest and Mexico. After a period in which the theology program moved to Castroville, the seminary settled in 1927 on its present wooded campus north of downtown and was renamed De Mazenod Scholasticate, after Oblate founder Eugene de Mazenod. It became the Oblate College of the Southwest in 1962 and won accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in the late 1960s; women religious were admitted to courses beginning in 1970, and in the mid-1970s a master of theological studies was created for people already working in ministry. The school adopted the name Oblate School of Theology in 1981 and gained Association of Theological Schools accreditation the next year. Today it is a graduate school of theology and spirituality whose grounds also hold the Lourdes Grotto & Tepeyac de San Antonio, popular pilgrimage shrines.
