History
Big Bend National Park protects the largest area of Chihuahuan Desert habitat in the United States along the Rio Grande in southwest Texas. It grew from a state park created in 1933; Texas acquired most of the land for about $1.5 million and deeded it to the federal government, and the park was formally established on June 12, 1944, opening to visitors that July. President Roosevelt accepted the park deed from Texas businessman Amon Carter on June 6, 1944, the day of the Normandy landings, and the park drew 1,409 visitors in its first year.
