History
Cameron County's second courthouse in Brownsville was built in 1912-1914 by the Gross Construction Company to a design by San Antonio architect Atlee B. Ayres in the Classical Revival style. Behind its relatively plain brick exterior rises a three-story rotunda crowned by an art-glass dome, its rich interior ornament recalling the Chicago School of Louis Sullivan. Often called the Dancy Building for County Judge Oscar C. Dancy, who championed its construction, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and comprehensively restored between 1994 and 2006.
