History

Hart Cemetery serves the town of Hart in southern Castro County, at the junction of State Highway 194 and Farm roads 145 and 168 about fifteen miles southeast of Dimmitt. The community was named for T. W. Hart, who established a ranch headquarters near Running Water Draw in 1899 and opened a post office in his home in 1900. Hart did not become an organized town until 1925, when the Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway built a depot there. The cemetery, with several hundred graves, holds the families who built up the surrounding farming community.
