Fort Chadbourne was established by the U.S. Army on October 28, 1852, in what is now Coke County to protect the frontier and the Butterfield Overland Mail route, and it was named for Lt. T. L. Chadbourne, killed at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. It guarded a Butterfield stage station from 1858 to 1861, surrendered to Confederate forces in 1861, and was reoccupied by federal troops from 1865 to 1867. The Fort Chadbourne Foundation now preserves the site, its restored buildings, and a visitor center.
