History

This burial ground is associated with Fort Chadbourne, the frontier U.S. Army post established in the early 1850s to protect settlers and the Butterfield Overland Mail route through what is now northern Coke County. The Old Fort Chadbourne Cemetery lies south of U.S. 277 about a mile and a half from the fort ruins, and its graves reach back to the mid-1800s, including early area families such as the Allens, Alsups, and Bagleys. It is one of two historic cemeteries near the old fort site.
