History

Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer (1801-1879), known as the 'father of Texas botany,' built this timber-framed saltbox house overlooking the Comal River in New Braunfels in 1852. From 1853 he edited the German-language Neu-Braunfelser Zeitung, running the newspaper from a print shop in the rear of the house for some two decades. A prolific plant collector who gathered tens of thousands of specimens, Lindheimer left a home that is now a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
