History

Captain James Cunningham (1816-1894), born in Tennessee, moved to the upper Leon River country about 1855 and was among the first settlers of what became Comanche County. During the Civil War he captained the county's company in the Second Frontier District and led local pursuit of raiding parties. He operated a ranch of some 9,000 acres and is buried in Newburg Cemetery.
